What is the Lymphatic system... and why is it so important?

Our lymphatic system is quite literally the ‘drain’ of our body, the sewerage system that works to remove toxins and debris from our bodily tissues. It also delivers nutrients and immune enhancing cells to our tissues and is truly a key player in the body’s immunity.

You can see from the image that this system is an extensive network of vessels, nodes and ducts that pass through almost all bodily tissues. It allows the circulation of a fluid called Lymph through the body in a similar way to blood.

It also assists in transporting fat, fighting infections, and removing excess fluid and plays a key role in intestinal function.

The lymphatic system is pretty easy to maintain but most of us forget or often don’t take the time to pamper this amazing system.

If it gets clogged up, then it can wreak havoc on our health and affect our immune system and cause us to feel unwell.

Here are some signs that you need to cleanse your lymphatic system:

  • headaches and Sinus pain

  • fatigue and sluggishness

  • skin conditions and dry itchy skin

  • swollen Fingers, hands, toes or feet

  • feeling sore and stiff in the morning

  • brain fog

  • enlarged lymph nodes

  • you have been diagnosed with Lymphedema

Do any of these resonate with you?

Here are some quick and easy things you can do to cleanse your lymphatic system

  • Exercise/ move your body- find something that brings you joy and get moving

  • Hydrate- drink more water!

  • Use a dry brush and get moving (this is one of my fav’s)

  • Book a lymphatic drainage massage- it’s so gentle and relaxing and you will notice a big difference

  • Go braless… aka Free the girls as often as possible. Bra’s restrict the flow of lymph fluid

Winter is almost here and guess what??

We tend to become a little more stagnant in the winter. Our instincts are to stay warm, eat warming foods and maybe not move as much as we normally do. This means our lymph system isn’t flowing as well as it should be.

Remember, this system directly affects our immune system as the body is a whole and everything is connected. Pretty fascinating right??

Thermography is an incredible tool and among many other things, it has the ability to detect lymphatic drainage issues.

So let’s get ahead of it and set our sights on prevention.
